Okara Lakes traces its beginnings to 1920, when the de Camp family began developing the area through Ga-Wan-Ka as a private Adirondack vacation community. Noted architect H. Van Buren Magonigle helped shape its early design vision, which included Japanese-inspired cottages with distinctive rooflines. The beginnings of this community of private camps are now commemorated by a William G. Pomeroy Foundation historic marker.
